Living and Travel

Living Arrangements and Food Service:

Participants live in the same hostels as continental African students. Hostels are open and accessible to participants year-round. GLN also encourages and can arrange home-stays in which you live with a host-country family or in residences with local and international students. You will have the opportunity to discover the richness of the culture through the eyes of the people themselves, develop lasting friendships and benefit from valuable networking. While participants may cook or make their own arrangements for meals, GLN provides traditional, family style meals consisting of nutritious traditional and international foods.

Travel and Excursions:

Co-curricular activities are embedded in all GLN academic Programs. Participant observation, field trips, practicum, and other innovative experiential learning ventures are designed to enhance the courses of study. Together, these add up to a complete education abroad.
While transatlantic travel is the responsibility of participants, GLN can offer travel advice. Co-curricular activities, including field trips, are the responsibility of GLN.

In-Country Support:

Every GLN Program has a Resident Director (RD) who is either a native of the host country or has thorough understanding of its language and culture. The RD provides overall supervision of the Program, and assists students with academic, administrative, and day-to-day matters. Almost all GLN faculty and staff members have studied or lived abroad. Further, each Program works hand-in-glove with the GLN office that processed your admission to ensure the efficient, well-coordinated functioning of your education abroad program.

Core Services:

GLN foreign offices handle student admission, advising, interfacing with each participant’s home university, pre-departure orientation, collection of tuition and fees, and coordination with the appropriate GLN office in Africa. The GLN offices in Africa are responsible for interfacing with African educational institutions that partner with GLN, arranging academic programs, arranging housing and food services, and so forth. In other words GLN foreign offices and GLN offices in Africa work seamlessly to assure your experience is meaningful. Our staff provides core infrastructural services, including:

• Assist participants with baggage at the airport, and provide transportation to the Program's quarters.
• Assist with Immigration Services requirements, including the acquiring of Residence Permits.
• Provision of housing and food services.
• Arrange ground transportation in Africa.
• Assist with the provision of health services, if necessary.
• Assist those who want to be involved in spiritual or religious activities.
• Arrange recreational activities.

GLN can provide other services and facilities on request.
