DESCRIPTION:
No matter what your race, no matter what your color, your roots are here. Human beings and civilization arose in Africa. And in terms of culture and natural resources, Africa is our richest continent. A vast region -- and the world’s most stable land mass -- it covers nearly 12 million square miles (31 million square kilometers). That’s big enough to hold the land occupied by China, India, Europe, Argentina, New Zealand and the continental United States, with room to spare! Yet for many today, Africa remains a mystery, shrouded in the fog of imperialism and the economics and politics of domination.
The “African Origins of Civilization” is the theme of this Program. Based in Ethiopia, we will study, research and conduct field trips to important cultural and archaeological sites as we follow the trail of the rise of humanity. Sub-themes will include:
1. The Rise of Spiritual and Material Civilization
2. The Significance of Geographic, Cultural, and Historic Memory
3. The Rise of New Cradles of Culture and Material Expression
4. Interpreting Contemporary Human Diversity and its Consequences
Additionally, you will enjoy the mild and healthful climate of the East African highlands, uniquely African eateries and entertainment, vibrant outdoor markets, theatrical productions, festivals and holiday celebrations, and a myriad of other expressions of living culture. This is Africa!
